Summer Recap

We're a week into school and I haven't yet caught my breath, but George is taking a longer nap and I have a few minutes before getting Eloise from the bus stop (which I'm still getting used to!) so let's see if I can do a quick summer recap.

First: Cutchogue!

This was our first time taking the kids to Greenport since Mimi was a baby, and the girls LOVED the old-fashioned carousel. And Lucharito's was a hit with all parties involved. I can't wait to go back when I'm not pregnant and get an extra-large margarita.

We took a trip out to the end of the North Fork and spent the morning at Orient Beach State Park—so beautiful.

The girls are at such fun ages (almost 4/almost 6) for the beach. They happily entertained themselves swimming, boogie boarding and playing in the sand all day!

This little rascal kept us on our toes. The first couple days I was scratching my head for who could come retrieve him for us so we could enjoy our vacation in peace? Thankfully after a few days he settled down and most importantly, slept and napped well the whole trip!

I never understood the utility of baby pools on the beach but now we are those people. I didn't take a picture of our full setup but we had multiple passersby marvel at our encampment. Ten-by-ten canopy tent, two anti-gravity lounge chairs that came with the house, three quilts for the kids, baby pool, float, pool bag, cooler. Nick had his work cut out for him with all the assembly/disassembly each day! Thankfully the house we stay in is right on the beach, which is the only way that made that possible.

Kayaking with all my girls :) So fun! Mimi could go all day if we let her.

We love you, Cutchogue! Thank you Robertsons for your gem of a home!

Camps! The girls did three weeks of their preschool's camp, a week of nature camp, a week of VBS, and had a couple riding lessons. It felt like just the right balance of camps and at-home time. The girls love love loved their camps, and I held on to George's morning nap for most of the summer so it afforded me some breather while they were gone.

We celebrated this special little lady turning four.

We got very little use out of the pool this summer. It is soooooo hard to do the pool now with three kids, and I can't even imagine next summer with four. Not sure we'll continue to join, at least until everyone is older and more self-sufficient. When we were there we had fun though, in the parent sense of course.

Rascally rascal. He probably cried for 80% of the summer for no apparent reason, and I probably have 45 new gray hairs. But OH he and the million mouth-kisses he gives me each day are delicious. I will forgive you.

My parents took us out for a nice end-of-summer dinner, and we toasted to their 40 years of marriage, which they're currently celebrating in Napa and Sonoma.

We celebrated my favorite sister's 30th birthday in NYC, where we had the best facials at Rescue Spa—truly, I'm still thinking about it—and a delicious dinner at her favorite restaurant, Supper. I stayed over at her apartment and she and Joe drove me back to NJ the following day. It was so nice to have some sister time, and nice to cap off the summer with a little bit of fun, which is a department I'm typically sorely lacking in!

We had many ordinary days. Tree climbing, raspberry picking, bike riding, waiting for the ice cream man, and a good amount of TV. For being in survival mode I don't think we did too badly for ourselves.

It might be the last year the girls let me celebrate their birthdays (which are 6 weeks apart) together. This was our first year doing a "friend party" and we had a handful of kids and their parents for Friday afternoon/evening pizza. A failsafe party combination at these ages seems to be jumpy house + face painter + pinata + pizza and ice cream cake. We were sooooo last minute with this party but I think it went over without a hitch.

This was the last day of summer before Eloise started kindergarten. So bittersweet. I guarantee you didn't see me on Labor Day because I was sobbing all day long. Yes summer is still long and exhausting but I wouldn't trade it. It's been a privilege and a joy being at home with her these past nearly six years and I miss her while she's gone all day. I am already looking forward to next summer so I can have her back!
